There are many great examples of fathers and the important roles they play that can be found in the Holy Bible. Here are just a few:
Adam
Adam was the first father on Earth and set an example of good fatherhood and strong leadership. The prophet Luke praised Adam and called him, “the son of God” (Luke 3:38), and we know that through his lineage came incredible prophets like Enos, Enoch, Methuselah and Noah.
Abraham
The Biblical prophet Abraham is often referred to as “the father of the faithful.” His name literally means, “Father of a Multitude,” and he was promised that his posterity would be a great nation (Genesis 12:2-3) and as numberless as the stars (Genesis 15:5). He rejoiced in the birth of his son, Isaac, and yet, when Abraham was asked to sacrifice Isaac, he had trusted that God had a plan. Abraham was blessed for his obedience, and Isaac learned a great lesson in faith in God from his father and became a great leader and prophet in Israel as well.
Joseph
Matthew 1 says that he was “a just man.” Joseph took care of Mary and raised the son of God, Jesus Christ, in faith and righteousness and “Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” (Luke 2:52).
Heavenly Father
God the Father knows and loves each one of us individually. He is the ultimate example of fatherhood as He sent His only begotten son to Earth to save us, His children.
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf said, “He loves us because He is filled with an infinite measure of holy, pure, and indescribable love. We are important to God not because of our résumé but because we are His children. He loves every one of us, even those who are flawed, rejected, awkward, sorrowful, or broken. God’s love is so great that He loves even the proud, the selfish, the arrogant, and the wicked. What this means is that, regardless of our current state, there is hope for us. No matter our distress, no matter our sorrow, no matter our mistakes, our infinitely compassionate Heavenly Father desires that we draw near to Him so that He can draw near to us.”
